GOOD GRIEF

Grief is weight – something you bear, a heaviness you learn to carry.  Grief is the weight of never.
– Ron Marasco –

Grief is something none of us can escape yet the topic is rarely discussed because there is no one way we all experience it. Knowing how difficult the subject is Ron Marasco, on the faculty of Loyola Marymount University, began teaching a course on grief and his book, Grief, grew out of his lectures and research.

Due to nature of the topic many grieving people feel alone in their pain and there exist no magic pills for relief and even time, although it has an effect, does not eliminate grief, at best it just may put it in perspective after a while.

As Ron states: Grief is what happens when all the drama ends Death is the dramatic event, grief the harder slog.
A while back I had a moving conversation with Ron about the topic and it proved to provide solace for many of my viewers. I now want to share it with all with the hope that it may comfort those in grief, those who know someone in grief, and eventually all of us, if we haven’t already will experience grief.

Below is my entire conversation with Ron. Click on the image and share with all who may benefit. As Ron so eloquently states: Grief teaches you a lot about yourself.
Plus, airing this week on most of our PBS stations is my conversation with the beautiful actress Victoria Tennant about her gorgeous photo/biography Irina Baronova. Irina is Victoria’s mom and the woman who brought ballet to America.
Enjoy them both and have a great week,
Barry

EMBRACING STRESS

The best way to manage stress isn’t to reduce or avoid it, but rather rethink and even embrace it.
– Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D –

Kelly McGonigal, a brilliant psychologist and professor at Stanford, is shaking up the world about preconceived notions of stress. With her revolutionary book, The Upside of Stress, she blows away all myths about stress and shows why it is actually good for you and how you can master it.
Stress can make you smarter, stronger, and more successful. It helps you learn and grow. It can even inspire courage and compassion.
In our conversation, airing this week on most of our PBS stations, we get personal and delve deep into this original way of thinking. It is certain to give all new insights into the stress of our lives and how we can benefit from it rather than fear or attempt to escape it.
Plus, this being Memorial Day Weekend, have a great time at all your holiday celebrations but take a moment to thank all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and who served so valiantly in order that we can live a life of liberty.

Enjoy the show and the holiday,
Barry

SOMETHING TRULY EPIC

With all of today’s blockbuster movies, the man whose work inspired the word EPIC, Cecil B. Demille, still remains the most commercially successful director in history.
I want my audience to feel what I am telling.
-Cecil B. DeMille-

For many of those films, his granddaughter, Cecilia DeMille Presley was by his side and I had the pleasure of talking with her about the gorgeous picture/history book she wrote with Mark Vieira titled: Cecil B. DeMille-The Art of the Hollywood Epic.
Airing on most of our PBS stations this week, the episode will give you a true insider’s look at not only the man, but the creation of Hollywooditself and what drives a visionary and artist.

From his first silent film The Squaw Man to his acclaimed Western The Plainsman, Cecil B. DeMille not only made the films but invented much of the equipment used to this day.
And when you look at his epics from Samson and Delilah to his most famous film of all, The Ten Commandments, Cecil B. DeMille broke the barriers of filmmaking and set the stage for what we know as the modern films of today.

Enjoy the show and Happy Mother’s Day to all the women who bring life, love and beauty to our world,
Barry

Mad about Mad Men

There’s no better story than a story you don’t know the ending of, about a man changing his life, and you identify with it immediately.
– Matthew Weiner, discussing Mad Men on Between the Lines

To see the complete episode of my conversation with Matthew Weiner CLICK HERE
The final episode of Mad Men, what many consider to be one of the great television series of our time, airs its final episode in a few weeks.
I was blessed with the privilege of having its creator, show runner, executive producer and head writer Matthew Weiner, as a guest on my show just before its fourth season.
Mad Men is personally one of my favorite shows and Matthew one of my most profound and enjoyable guests.
Our conversation explores the philosophical and sociological underpinnings of the series, its creator and of the era it so faithfully recreates.
As we bid a sad, but fond farewell, to this transformative and ground breaking television series I want to share with all my viewers and readers this classic Between the Linesepisode. CLICK HERE or watch below:
Plus, this week’s episode on most of our PBS stations features my conversation with the philosopher and renowned atheist Sam Harris, about his very spiritual book about consciousness, Waking Up.
Enjoy them both and thank you Matthew for bringing such a fine show for all to experience,
Barry

YOUR INNER BRAND

Embrace the uncertainties and challenge the illusion of defeat.
Brian Smith
Since the only thing we can be certain of are the uncertainties we will face, our only option is to embrace the feeling of the unknown. Like all wisdom, the concept may be easy to grasp, but its implementation into our being is the tricky part.
My guest this week, on most of our PBS stations, is Brian Smith, the founder of the world renowned UGG boots. Through his own trials and tribulations he discovered insights that will aid in putting into practice the ability to deal with difficult challenges.
Our conversation, about his book, The Birth of a Brand, focuses on his journey and struggles to build his business, while being filled with wisdom and insight he imbibed through the process.
The secret is to find joy every day in some part of your work that energizes and inspires you, so that what you do daily is not really working.

Of course, we all search for what we would love to do, but finding that magic within ourselves is a difficult challenge. In fact, for those who are lucky, hopefully it finds you.
However, if you are antsy like me, we cannot comfortably sit around and wait. Brian gives us something we can do even without knowing where it will take us.
When you take those first baby steps, you don’t have to know exactly where you are going to end up.

So journey forth. You may not know where you will end up, but if you take those baby steps you just might nudge yourself closer to finding YOUR INNER BRAND.
Enjoy the episode and have a great week,
Barry

HELLO GIDGET – GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD

There’s probably not a baby-boomer woman who at one time or another did not have a crush on James Darren, my guest this week on most of our PBS stations.

From his iconic role as Moondoggiein the Gidgetfilms to his Grammy nominated number one hit, Goodbye Cruel World, Jimmy is still entertaining audiences and has just released three new albumsthat show off his versatile and captivating voice.
For some this will be a true “blast from the past,” but for many you will see a modern day Jimmy Darren whose wit, charm and grace can still steal your heart.

Plus, so many have written me about how much they enjoyed my son’s short-film about re-imagining the Garfield comic that for those who haven’t seen it CLICK HERE so that you too can enjoy.
P.S. I would love to meet all my L.A. viewers this week when I’m at The L.A. Times Festival of Books at the KLCS-TV booth Saturday from 12-4. Hope to see you then.

Enjoy the episode, this wonderful short, and say hi at the Festival,
Barry

The Sounds of Music

The artists are the nation’s tears, the nation’s laughter, and ultimately, the nation’s memory.
-Theodore Bikel-

I first heard Theodore Bikel as a youngster listening to my parents play their favorite music on the stereo. His folk albums filled our home with a joyous sound I remember to this day.
When I was told by his publicist that Theo had written a memoir I could not resist having this most talented performer and cherished folk-singer on the show.
Theo is not only a folksinger, but an Oscar nominated actor for his role in The Defiant Ones and one of the great Broadway actors over the past 50 years.
His portrayal of Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof, is considered one of the best and he originated the iconic role of Captain Von Trapp from The Sound of Music. In fact, Rodgers and Hammerstein created the song Edleweiss personally for Theodore Bikel.
This week on most of our PBS stations you too will have the opportunity to meet and enjoy this remarkably talented man.
Plus, in honor of Passover and Easter, which begin this week, I thought an appropriate episode to post on my YouTube Channel would be one featuring the renowned Physicist and Philosopher Gerald Schroeder, whose book; God According to God, is a true viewer favorite.
Enjoy both shows and wishing all my viewers a lovely Easter and joyous Passover,
Barry

Why We Must Become Leaders

It’s our collective task to liberate the leader in each and every one of us.
James Kouzes  and Barry Posner The Leadership Challenge

James Kouzes, along with his co-author Barry Posner, wrote what is celebrated throughout the world as the definitive book on becoming a leader. With over two million copies sold their book, The Leadership Challenge, inspires and encourages the heart so that all may embark on a lifetime journey of significance and personal success.
James was a guest on my show awhile back but his work and book may be more important now because there is a deep-rooted feeling that good leadership is lacking in many of our institutions.

One reason I believe this is happening is because we ourselves are giving over the power of leadership that is rightfully ours. As James says:
The first place to look for leadership is in yourself.
I’m putting this timely and important episode on our YouTube Channel and it is also embedded directly below.
Leadership is a process ordinary people use when they are bringing forth the best from themselves and others.  When the leader in everyone is liberated extraordinary things happen.
One place where leadership abounds is at NASA. This week’s episode on most of our PBS stations features my conversation with Rod Pyle and his book Innovation the NASA Way. NASA has faced many challenges and Rod Pyle outlines the ultimate solutions the agency’s talented team worked out.

Enjoy them both and have a great week,
Barry

EXPECTATION HANGOVER

We have all felt a sense of failure, an inner belief that we did not live up to our own standards. However, as hard as it may be to eliminate those feelings, we can stop suffering from them.

My guest this week on most of our PBS stations is life coach Christine Hassler. She has treated many people who suffer when their reality is not matching what they assumed would be occurring in their lives. However, Christine sees things differently.

Your thoughts about what is happening in your life have a far greater impact on your well-being than what is actually happening.

Our conversation, and her book, Expectation Hangover, will open up new doors. Christine explains how we can turn dark emotions into driving forces that empower.

Your disappointment might be the best thing that ever happened to you.

Christine’s advice to rid yourself of expectation hangovers is much more effective and better tasting than tomato juice and a raw egg in the morning.

Plus, on our YouTube Channel and embedded below, is my conversation with Academy Award winner William Friedkin.

The episode is a passionate discussion on the craft of film with the director of such classic as The Exorcist and The French Connection.

Enjoy them both and have a great week,
Barry

What Would George Washington Do?

According to the most recent Rasmussen Poll nearly 70% of all likely voters believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.
As alarming as that statistic is, it is not the first time our nation has felt that we were headed in the wrong direction. In fact, the father of our country, George Washington, at one time also felt very disappointed in the direction of our newly formed nation and was not afraid to state it:
Virtue, I fear, has, in a great degree, taken its departure from our land.
This week airing on most of our stations is my conversation with Pulitzer Prize winning historian Edward Larson about his book The Return of George Washington.
The focus is on the role Washington played from the period between the Revolution and the forming of our Constitution.
The wisdom of Washington was that he knew to set things right we had to COME TOGETHER to fulfill the goals set forth in our Declaration of Independence.
We exhibit at present the novel & astonishing Spectacle of a whole People deliberating calmly on what form of government will be most conducive to their happiness…
Just imagine what we can accomplish if we heed his advice and begin “deliberating calmly” rather than the constant political bickering that currently dominates our government, our media, and then seeps into our own consciousness which explains those dismal polling numbers.

There may never be another Washington, but there certainly still is a whole People (us) that has the ability to pull together and create what is most conducive to our happiness.
If not, we will be heeding another warning of Washington:

Something must be done, or we shall disappoint not only America, but the whole world.
Let’s not disappoint. We have it in us; we just need to let it out.

Enjoy the show, the week, and look forward to continuing this great American experiment,
Barry
