COUNTERCLOCKWISE

Last week’s post on TIME generated much feedback from readers. Two came from prominent physicists who have appeared on Between the Lines.
One,  Jack Hokikian, appeared on the program with his book The Science of Disorder. Our discussion focused on the Second Law of Thermodynamics – Entropy, a measurement of disorder. The First law of Thermodynamics states that energy can be transformed from one state to another, but cannot be created or destroyed. In the Second Law of Thermodynamics entropy is always increasing even though the amount of matter and energy stay the same. With more TIME comes more DISORDER.

The other prominent physicist who appeared twice on the program is Gerald Schroeder with his books: God According to God and The Hidden Face Of God. In his e-mail he commented on the following statement from last weeks blog.

“Believe it or not, time moves slower in an upstairs apartment then a downstairs apartment due to gravity. So if you want to live longer you should live on at least the second story.”

Gerald informed me of the following:

“It is true that tangential velocity is higher on the 2nd floor than the first so that would slow time. However gravity is lower on the 2nd floor and that would speed time. In your calculations have you corrected for these 2 counter opposing effects?”

Although I did not preform the calculations I did notice a relation between time and this week’s upcoming episode of Between the Lines. Debuting in Los Angeles and many markets across the country, featuring Lauren Kessler.

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK

Lauren Kessler, with her book Counterclockwise, investigates how we can turn the clock back and reverse our biological age.  Although it has nothing to do with what floor you live on, it is all about the difference in TIME between our chronological clocks and our biological clocks.

“Chronological age is meaningless – It’s the age of the body that’s important, the true ages of the heart, lungs, arteries, brain, muscles…
There are two distinct (but overlapping) aging processes: primary aging and secondary aging. Primary aging is the body aging itself, Secondary aging is the result over time of everything we do or do not do to ourselves- Secondary aging is within our control.”

It may be in our control but do we exercise that control? Even if we do, will it actually add years to our lives? Lauren herself ponders the same question.

THE RANDOMNESS OF LIFE

While she was eating near perfect food, exercising, taking all sorts of supplements and putting her body through all types of exercise regimens to reverse her internal clock and gather all the research for her book, she notes the irony with an example from her father:
“He never met a vegetable he liked, carried an extra 30 pounds of that especially dangerous, rock-hard abdominal fat for decades—and played tennis into his eighties.
TIME AGAIN

Time increases disorder. Speed effects our perspective of it. How we treat our bodies effects our internal clock. Yet, no matter what we do about it may make no difference. There is a lesson still to be learned. It matters more what you do with your time, than what time has in store for you.

TIME

As many viewers can attest, I often bring up the subject of TIME because I find it so intriguing on many levels. From the personal to the scientific and from the emotional to the physical, the subject fascinates me.

On a recent trip I downloaded a Scientific American Magazine Special called:
A Question of Time: The Ultimate Paradox and recommend it to anyone who is as curious about the topic as I am.
WHAT IS TIME
Here is how it was described in the first article: (All Italicized words are from the Scientific American Magazine.)

If we seek a precise knowledge of the time, the elusive infinitesimal of “now” dissolves into a scattering flock of nanoseconds. Bound by the speed of light and the velocity of nerve impulses, our perceptions of the present sketch the world as it was an instant ago—for all that our consciousness pretends otherwise, we can never catch up.

Maybe this is why I always have trouble living in the “now”. There really is no “now”. It is gone in less than the blink of an eye.
WHAT TIME IS IT?

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is truly a time based theory and the implications derived from it are still being grappled with by physicists, mathematicians and philosophers to this day. Can we ever know the precise time or does it always depend on where we are, how fast we travel, how precise we can measure it, and even how gravitational pull effects it.

Believe it or not, time moves slower in an upstairs apartment then a downstairs apartment due to gravity. So if you want to live longer you should live on at least the second story. I should mention that over a hundred year period, if you should live that long, you would have gained about 10 nanoseconds of life assuming you don’t trip on the stairs and break your neck.
TIME IS MONEY

How can we ever place a true value on time? There never seems to be enough when things go good and nothing drags so slowly when things are bad. The editor’s pose this thought:
It is our most precious, irreplaceable commodity. Yet still we say we don’t know where it goes, and we sleep away a third of it, and none of us really can account for how much we have left… Still, the commodification of time is genuine—and results from a radical alteration in how we view the passage of events.
How much do we have left and how we spend it is our biggest dilemma. Its passage seems real but is it?
FOR ALL TIME
From the beginning philosophers and scientists always questioned the role time plays in our lives. It is the core question of how our universe came into existence. Like the chicken or the egg, no one is certain which came first: Time or the Universe.

Aristotle, taking the no-beginning side, invoked the principle that out of nothing, nothing comes. If the universe could never have gone from nothingness to somethingness, it must always have existed.
 SPACE AND TIME
You literally can take years of physics classes and never truly figure this one out, but here is a practical situation we all deal with:
A time error of only a millionth of a second from an individual satellite could send a signal to a GPS receiver that would be inaccurate by as much as a fifth of a mile.

PASSAGE OF TIME
Nothing in known physics corresponds with the passage of time. Most modern theorists are now arguing if it even exists.
“The past, present and future are only illusions, even if stubborn ones.” Einstein’s startling conclusion stems directly from his special theory of relativity, which denies any absolute, universal significance to the present moment.

Yet, if anything perplexes us it is the passage of time. No matter what the physicists say we all know that in real life time goes one way.
The passage of time is probably the most basic facet of human perception, for we feel time slipping by in our innermost selves in a manner that is altogether more intimate than our experience of, say, space or mass.

MODERN TIMES

In our present age it really does feel like time is flying by. Truth is, it may not just be a feeling.
Today the number of occurrences packed inside a given interval, whether it be a year or a nanosecond, increases unendingly.  The world’s speediest transistors can switch faster than a picosecond, a thousandth of a billionth of a second.
MIND YOUR TIME
But there is another kind of time altogether. “Mind time” has to do with how we experience the passage of time and how we organize chronology. And this variability can happen on different scales, from decades, seasons, weeks and hours, down to the tiniest intervals of music—the span of a note or the moment of silence between two notes.
ENOUGH ABOUT TIME
I just realized if you read this far I probably took up too much of your time.
Yet for most of us, time is not only real, it is the master of everything we do.

As far as I can tell it may be the master, but we will never be able to master it. All we can do is fill up that time the best we can and appreciate the time we have.

Yesterday’s World, Tomorrow’s Future and the Pulitzer Prize

Jared Diamond, the Pulitzer Prize winning author, makes his debut on Between the Lines with his latest book The World Until Yesterday.

In it you will see not only what we learn from certain traditional societies, but most importantly, how to appreciate the advantages our own society offers.
Taken for Granted

  • Even though the numbers are smaller due to the size of the populations, the murder percentage rate in many traditional societies is more than THREE times the rate of that in the United States.
  • Men in traditional societies grow up from childhood learning to kill for survival, but most modern citizens grow up being taught that killing is bad.
  • Trench warfare, machine guns, napalm, atomic bombs, artillery, and submarine torpedoes produce time-averaged war-related death tolls much lower than those from spears, arrows, and clubs.
Reading Jared’s book I was taken by how many misconceptions I had. Some in particular stood out.

Flying Close to the Sun

  • Modern societies don’t always think as clearly as we should about the dangers we face. We misestimate risks because we get most of our information second-hand from mass media that emphasize the sensational but rare accidents and mass deaths.

  • We citizens of modern states commonly ignore how strong the thirst for vengeance can be. Among human emotions, it ranks along with love, anger, grief, and fear.

  • Jared points out that scholars tend to identify and sympathize with tribal communities who they live with, but often deny the reality of how violent they are compared to modern societies.

Stepping Off Giant Shoulders
We should not naively idealize small-scale societies, view them as uniformly admirable, overstate their advantages, and castigate state government as at best a necessary evil. On the other hand, many small-scale societies do possess some features that we could profitably incorporate into our state societies.
The above quote, from The World Until Yesterday, is what we need to do. We must learn all the positive lessons we can from our past, and there are plenty, but we cannot glorify the past. For although we stand on the shoulders of giants, it is only so we can see a more glorious future. As with most things in life there is a delicate balance. Find the balance between yesterday’s lessons and tomorrow’s challenges and you will be grateful for your present situation.
