HELLO GIDGET – GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD

There’s probably not a baby-boomer woman who at one time or another did not have a crush on James Darren, my guest this week on most of our PBS stations.

From his iconic role as Moondoggiein the Gidgetfilms to his Grammy nominated number one hit, Goodbye Cruel World, Jimmy is still entertaining audiences and has just released three new albumsthat show off his versatile and captivating voice.
For some this will be a true “blast from the past,” but for many you will see a modern day Jimmy Darren whose wit, charm and grace can still steal your heart.

Plus, so many have written me about how much they enjoyed my son’s short-film about re-imagining the Garfield comic that for those who haven’t seen it CLICK HERE so that you too can enjoy.
P.S. I would love to meet all my L.A. viewers this week when I’m at The L.A. Times Festival of Books at the KLCS-TV booth Saturday from 12-4. Hope to see you then.

Enjoy the episode, this wonderful short, and say hi at the Festival,
Barry

The Sounds of Music

The artists are the nation’s tears, the nation’s laughter, and ultimately, the nation’s memory.
-Theodore Bikel-

I first heard Theodore Bikel as a youngster listening to my parents play their favorite music on the stereo. His folk albums filled our home with a joyous sound I remember to this day.
When I was told by his publicist that Theo had written a memoir I could not resist having this most talented performer and cherished folk-singer on the show.
Theo is not only a folksinger, but an Oscar nominated actor for his role in The Defiant Ones and one of the great Broadway actors over the past 50 years.
His portrayal of Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof, is considered one of the best and he originated the iconic role of Captain Von Trapp from The Sound of Music. In fact, Rodgers and Hammerstein created the song Edleweiss personally for Theodore Bikel.
This week on most of our PBS stations you too will have the opportunity to meet and enjoy this remarkably talented man.
Plus, in honor of Passover and Easter, which begin this week, I thought an appropriate episode to post on my YouTube Channel would be one featuring the renowned Physicist and Philosopher Gerald Schroeder, whose book; God According to God, is a true viewer favorite.
Enjoy both shows and wishing all my viewers a lovely Easter and joyous Passover,
Barry

Society’s Child

This week, airing on most of our stations, is a viewer favorite featuring John Murphy and his book Zentrepreneur.
Another viewer favorite, that almost all my new markets never saw, was my conversation with the great singer-songwriter, Janis Ian – Full episode below and on our YouTube Channel.

I don’t really care about arriving.  I care about what happens on the path I take to get there.

– Janis Ian –
I was recently talking with my family about Janis because her music touched so many and continues to do so. Just as we finished our chat her song, At Seventeen, came on our radio. It was enough of a sign for me. I then re-watched the episode featuring her. In fact, it is one of the rare episodes where you will see my guest sing. I decided to post it here for all to enjoy, not only her beautiful music, but her wisdom and insight.

Be it business or the music of our lives, enjoy and have a great week,

To Begin Again

I saw the new film Begin Again directed by John Carney (the writer/director of Once) and starring Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightly. I enjoyed it on many different levels – the realism, the music, and the wonderful cast.
What I enjoyed most about it, and for that matter any art form, is when it takes my mind on tangents that are sparked by what I saw, heard or read.
By the title alone you can tell this one made me think about “beginning again” and all that implies on so many levels.
Sometimes we are forced to begin again. Maybe it’s because of a great loss, a freak accident, or a life altering experience. Sometimes we choose to begin again. Maybe it’s starting a new job or career, moving to a new location, or the choice to retire.
There’s no doubt a difference between being forced to begin again or choosing to begin again, but for the most part the emotional, psychological and even physical aspects are somewhat the same.

Whenever we are faced with having to begin again there are things we have on our side that we can use to make the experience fulfilling. Feel passionate about your new beginning. Let it be uncompromising. Be confident and look only forward to all the wonder that lies ahead. Plus, proceed with joy and a dash of humor.
As the great philosopher – poet John O’Donohue writes in his blessing For a New Beginning.
Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm.
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.
Enjoy all your new beginnings,
Barry

SLIGHT ALTERATIONS LEAD TO REINVENTION

For the past few weeks I had a gnawing thought that I had to make a major change. A reinvention of myself seemed required in order to accomplish a particular goal, but I couldn’t figure out what steps were needed. Then an awareness hit me. What I needed was a slight alteration in perception to realize that I already was on the path of reinvention and major change. It was then reinforced when listing the episode that debuts this week on many of our PBS stations.

The episode features Sam Harris. Many will remember Sam as the first winner of the hit television series Star Search. He went on to become a multiplatinum recording artist and song writer and a career that includes countless credits as a stage and television actor, producer and director.

Sam decided it was time for him to take on another challenge, a reinvention of himself so he can continue to express his creativity. During our conversation about his book, Ham – Slices of a Life, he revealed that although this was a reinvention on one level, like my own realization it was not a complete shift but a slight alteration. Sam said that he was always a story teller with a wicked sense of humor, but that it was expressed in his music and performances. What he needed to reinvent himself was to take what he was already doing and alter it to fit his new desired form or expression. In fact it did not require giving up anything. With a slight alteration he became a successful essayist and humorist and now blends it all into his performances.

The more I thought about how Sam’s slight alteration in his journey caused a reinvention of himself and his career, it concurred very closely to my own situation.
After all, reinvention never stops. It occurs every moment of our lives. Our own body reinvents itself continuously through small alterations even on the deepest, cellular level. So, on one level, we are actually designed for change. We not only have the ability to reinvent ourselves, but do so continuously.
So if you ever get that gnawing feeling that something major needs to change, remember it already is even if you cannot see or feel it. To quote Sam:
I have always believed that the light at the end of the tunnel is not an illusion; the illusion is the tunnel itself.

THE MUSIC IN ME

I have been blessed to have many wonderful musicians, singers and songwriters on Between the Lines. From Ray Manzarek and John Densmore of The Doors to Richie Havens and Janis Ian.  And musical guests as diverse as Mickey Hart,  one of the co-founders of The Grateful Dead, Chaka Khan, avant-garde pianist Sandy Owens  and Country Western singer/songwriter Larry Dean.
This week in Los Angeles and many of my markets across the country we go to some of the early roots of rock and roll with Gary U.S. Bonds  and his autobiography, By U.S. Bonds.

In our conversation he mentioned how Sam Cooke influenced him by saying: “Do something Bonds!” Sam meant that more important than just singing was to bring your soul into your performance.

When Gary started doing that his success followed right behind. In fact, Bruce Springsteen at an early age felt that soul come out of Gary and said that he became one of The Boss’s big influences and Gary and Bruce even play together on certain occasion to this day.

I remember my conversation with the late Ray Manzarek who said that he was not only aware of the soul in The Doors music, but believed that what the music did was actually penetrate the chakras in our body, not just our ears. That music can literally be absorbed by our cells and felt as much as heard. When I spoke about this with The Doors drummer, John Densmore he at first was taken aback by how powerful that sounded and then too realized how beautiful it was.

In fact, when meeting Richie Havens, the soulful experience must have exuded from his pores because when in his presence you actually feel it and it soothes you just being near him.

So next time you listen to any of the music in your life that moves you, remember, the music literally is in you. Feel it and enjoy where it takes you, for as Janis Ian so eloquently put it, “It’s all about the journey”.

Father’s Day and The Doors

This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day and the special role that good fathers, grandfathers, and good men who sometimes have to fill in for fathers, play in the lives of children.
Sadly, the importance of fathers often goes unnoticed except in their absence.
The Proof is in our Prisons

According to the Justice Department more than 78% of the nation’s prison inmates grew up in a fatherless household and that’s just the male prison population. In prisons for women, 50% grew up in fatherless households.

John Densmore – The Doors Unhinged and Fathers

For viewers in most cities this week, you will have the chance to see my conversation with the legendary John Densmore, one of the co-founders of the iconic rock group The Doors. Our discussion focused on his book The Doors Unhinged, which was about an epic trial between some of the band members who always considered themselves a family.

One of the most classic moments in the book and our conversation was when John spoke about Jim Morrison’s father.

When Jim was alive the relationship between him and his dad was often strained. Jim and The Doors where symbolically tied to the opposition of the Vietnam War, while Jim’s father was an Admiral in the Navy during the war, and lead ships into battle in Vietnam.

A Father’s Love Runs Deep
In John’s book and our conversation, what John expressed that was so moving and beautiful to learn, was the role Admiral Steven Morrison played during the trial. Jim’s dad, who at the time of the trial was in his late 80’s, stood by his son’s legacy and attended the trial every day for nearly a year, lending support to John and the entire Morrison family.

Besides the Music

John Densmore is one of those rare people who when they walk into a room you can feel and sense something very special. There was an aura of soul and spirit that surrounded him and was felt by myself, my family and the entire crew. It is a presence that you cannot help but enjoy basking in while relishing the moment.

Here is a mere sampling of some of John’s words that I want to share with all the great fathers we are blessed with and all those who appreciate them.

I’ve cultivated a newfound appreciation for words. As a musician, I was lost in the nonlinear world of sound, but now, language has become much more fascinating and compelling to me. I think I love words now, something that took me by surprise.

What makes an elder? Michael Meade, author, mythologist, and one of the leaders of the Men’s Movement in the eighties, said, “Everybody gets older, not everybody gets elder.”

John Densmore is truly an elder. Like all great fathers their wisdom grows and continues to shed light on all of us who are so grateful for their presence in our lives.
Thank you dad, and all great dads, who show why the role of a father needs to be celebrated not only on this special day, but always. And no one can be a great dad without the love they get from their children and wives that help make them who they are.
